Ever had a rough day and turned to chocolate, alcohol, shopping, drugs or some other external stimulus to get happy? I am sure you have because they work! But only fleetingly.
Money and chocolate and material things only make us short term happy. The reward hormone is released but it’s short lived. Hence we go on a yet another binge soon after. And yet doing good releases the bonding hormone. And that lasts a long long time.
The latest neuroscience reveals why. These things activate the Reward/Pleasure Hormone (Dopamine). But for lasting happiness we need another Hormone – the Bonding Hormone (Oxytocin) – to maintain that sense of happiness. You may be surprised to know that there are only four things that genuinely – we mean SERIOUSLY – flood the brain with both hormones. Doing Good is one of them.
We all know that when we help others we feel warmy warm inside. For many years this has been called the ‘helpers high’. Now the latest innovative neuroscience (monitoring brain chemistry), proves it. Doing good – whether it be an act of kindness, volunteering or donating – floods the brain with both Reward/Pleasure Hormone & Bonding Hormone. Darwin was misunderstood – humans may be born with a SELFISH gene (all too often seen these days) but as human beings we are WIRED to help others. For a demonstration of this and to find out the OTHER thing that releases both hormones – watch our little video below.
Hailey presented her “Better than Sex” talk at the “Happiness & its causes” conference in Sydney in June 2017, the worlds largest conference on happiness and wellbeing. There, she shared with 3,000 people why DoGooding is better than sex.

Just as Bill Gates is almost certainly happier helping humanity than he was making his billions, people of modest means can also appreciate the joy of helping others as it is the simple key to genuine long term happiness. We can either choose the Vicious downward spiral that starts with seeking happiness in external stimulus like alcohol, drugs, shopping and so forth that can lead to addiction, violence, weight gain, bullying, isolation, debt, greed, depression……or we can choose the Virtuous Cycle! EACH act of DoGooding® makes us feel purposeful and valuable and happy and it can lead to Contagious Optimism, Fulfilment, Admiration and all the things we mere humans crave!
Pretty simple huh? Given DoGooding® makes you feel good, and it’s good for society, let’s do more! Who knows, we might even change the world!
If you’d like to help us spread our message – it’s fairly simple – doing good is good for you – send us a note. And boy, as a society do we need to get this message out!
If you would like to invite Hailey to speak on this topic her ‘DoGooding® – Better Than Sex’ (an entertaining yet deeply provocative talk) is coming to a stage near you!
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If YOU want to be happy, practice compassion.Dalai Lama
Altruism is innate, but it's not instinctual. Everybody's wired for it, but a switch has to be flipped.David Rakoff
Altruism is one of the most fundamentally social impulses, and doing things for others without expecting anything in return is core to what makes us human. This is why, from the day Facebook Platform launched in 2007, Causes has been honoured to be one of the most popular applications, with over 140 million users.Joe Green
